It has been said that the cross serves as a picture of our relationships – the horizontal portion of the cross represents our relationships with others, and the vertical portion of the cross offers a picture of our relationship with God.  Our relationship with friends, family members, co-workers and others often reflects and depends upon our relationship with God.
