In a moment we are saved when we trust Christ, but for the rest of our lives we are learning. If we have died to sin, why do we keep sinning? There is a process to learning how to walk in our new-found freedom in Christ. As we walk with God, we should find that we have begun to hate sin and desire to be free from it. This is the starting point from which God begins to assert His power. This is the newness of life we walk as we put off the old self.
